Cuban Mojito
The Cuban Mojito recipe combines lime, sugar, mint leaves, rum and sparkling water (club soda) to create a refreshing summer drink. The combination of citrus, mint and sweetness, along with potent rum, makes for a light and crisp summer cocktail that many enjoy. Although there are only 5 basic ingredients in a Mojito, the recipe variations are vast. Here is a great Mojito recipe you are sure to enjoy.
Mojito Ingredients
- 5-10 Fresh Mint Leaves, (number based on your taste preferences)
- 2 tablespoons Sugar, (granulated, raw and unrefined is best)
- 1/2 Lime, (cut into four wedges)
- 1 cup Ice, (crushed or small cubes)
- 1.5 fl oz White Rum, (light rum is preferable to dark)
- 1/2 cup Club Soda
Mojito Recipe Directions
- Pull the larger, lower leaves off of a sprig of mint (leaving the small ones intact on the sprig) and drop into a glass. Sprinkle the sugar over the mint leaves and use a muddler to lightly crush the mint leaves. Do not grind the mint leaves until they separate. The key here is to gently press them to release the mint oils. If the mint leaves are ground too much the flavor may become bitter. Also, the leaves will tear apart and clog your straw while you are trying to enjoy your cocktail.
- Add the lime to the mint and sugar. Press and muddle the limes to release the lime juice and the oils of the lime peel into the Mojito.
- Fill the glass with crushed ice.
- Pour the rum over the ice and fill the remaining space in the glass with club soda.
- Garnish your Mojito with the remaining sprig of mint leaves and enjoy!

Which Variety of Mint is Best in a Mojito?
Mojitos can be made with many different types of mint depending on your taste preference and the availability of the mint in your area. The Cuban cocktail is usually made with one of three varieties: spearmint, peppermint, or mojito mint (also known as mentha x villosa). Some references cite spearmint as the original mint used in the classic Cuban Mojito, while others claim it was mentha x villosa or peppermint. If you can find all three varieties of mint you may want to try the Mojito recipe with the different mints or even try combining more than one mint variety in one Mojito.
Choose Your Sweetener
Although this Mojito recipe calls for raw, granulated sugar, some prefer to make a simple syrup. A Mojito made with sugar has sweet bits of undissolved sugar that give the drink a unique texture. However, some prefer that the sugar be dissolved completely in the cocktail. If this is your preference, you can make a simple syrup ahead of time by combining 1 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water. Heat it in the microwave or on the stove top until the sugar dissolves. Cool the mixture and use a couple tablespoons of the syrup in place of the granulated sugar in the Mojito recipe.
